The National Bank of Serbia’s (NBS) application for participation in the SEPA Credit Transfer (CT) payment scheme and for the operational execution of transactions for budget beneficiaries has received a positive assessment from the European Payments Council (EPC). As of 13 March 2026, the NBS will be listed in the EPC’s SEPA register.
The SEPA system will enable non-cash payments in euros under the jurisdiction of the NBS to be carried out under favourable and standardised conditions in all member states of this payment area. SEPA includes a total of 41 countries: all 27 member states of the European Union, the countries of the European Economic Area (Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein), Switzerland, the United Kingdom, as well as Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Albania, Montenegro, Moldova, North Macedonia and Serbia.
Accession to the SEPA system represents an important part of the comprehensive process of European integration of the Republic of Serbia and further alignment of the domestic financial system with the legal and institutional framework of the European Union. The NBS plays a key role in this process – both as a participant in SEPA payment schemes and as a supervisory authority that monitors and coordinates the process of Serbian commercial banks joining the SEPA system, ensuring compliance with all regulatory, technical and operational standards.
As the government’s banker, the NBS enables direct and indirect budget beneficiaries to carry out euro payment transactions more efficiently and cost-effectively, as well as to integrate more easily into European financial flows. Accession to the SEPA system is a milestone in further modernisation of payment services, as well as in alignment with the best European standards and practices. Payments within the SEPA CT scheme will become operational as of 5 May 2026, when the technical and operational phase of implementation is fully completed, thereby creating the conditions for payments within the SEPA area to be available at full capacity.
With this step, the NBS reaffirms its role as a responsible and reliable institution that ensures smooth functioning of the payment system and the preservation of financial stability, as well as demonstrates its clear commitment to enhancing efficiency, transparency and security in the management of public funds and the execution of payment transactions for direct and indirect budget beneficiaries, and to further strengthening the integration of Serbia’s financial system into the Single Euro Payments Area.
