National Bank of Serbia Issued Commemorative Coins to Mark 150th Anniversary of Birth of Nikola Tesla

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of birth of Nikola Tesla, the National Bank of Serbia issued gold and silver commemorative coins, the sale of which will start on July 10 this year. The new series comprises commemorative gold coins in the denomination of 10,000 dinars and the quantity of 1,000 pieces, then commemorative gold coins in the denomination of 5,000 dinars and the quantity of 2,000 pieces, and commemorative silver coins in the denomination of 1,000 dinars, also in the quantity of 2,000 pieces.

Commemorative coins in the denomination of 10,000 dinars (weight 8.640g, diameter 25 mm) and 5,000 dinars (weight 3.455 g, diameter 20 mm) are made of gold with the fineness of 900/1000, whereas commemorative coins in the denomination of 1,000 dinars (weight 13g, diameter 30mm) are made of silver with the fineness of 925/1000. Gold and silver coins are identical in design – the obverse features the portrait of Nikola Tesla and the anniversary years 1856-2006, whereas the reverse features the coat-of-arms of the Republic of Serbia, around which the text “Republika Srbija“ is written in Latin and Cyrillic scripts in a semicircle; the reverse also contains value numerals, under which the text “NBS“ is written in both Cyrillic and Latin letters.

Commemorative coins, issued on the occasion of 150th anniversary of birth of Nikola Tesla, will be sold at prices set by the National Bank of Serbia.

On the occasion of this anniversary, on June 30 the National Bank of Serbia placed into circulation 20-dinar coins featuring the portrait of Nikola Tesla, which will be in parallel circulation with the coins of the same value featuring the motif of the Church of St. Sava, which the National Bank of Serbia issued and placed into circulation in the year 2003. As the result of this latest issue, Tesla's portrait will, in the anniversary year of this scientist, for the first time be featured as a motif on coins in circulation.
