Trading in dirham and denar as of 1 November 2022, kuna removed as of 1 January 2023

At its meeting of 6 October, the NBS Executive Board adopted the Decision Amending the Decision on the Types of Foreign Exchange and Foreign Cash to Be Purchased and Sold in the Foreign Exchange Market:

  • Two new currencies are added to the list of currencies traded in the Serbian FX market – the dirham of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the denar of the Republic of North Macedonia;
  • The Croatian kuna is removed from the list.

The Decision will enter into force on 1 November 2022, apart from the provisions concerning the Croatian kuna, which will enter into force on 1 January 2023 (the date of Croatia’s accession to the euro area).

In making the decision to introduce the dirham, the NBS was guided by concrete needs of business entities and the potential for economic and other forms of cooperation. This move is important for further cooperation between the UAE and Serbia, notably in terms of further incentives for investment and operation of UAE and Serbian companies and the promotion of Serbia in the UAE.

The NBS introduced the Macedonian denar aware of the economic and other forms of cooperation between North Macedonia and Serbia and looking forward to even stronger cooperation, particularly in light of the Open Balkan Initiative. As the Initiative responds to the needs of business and real sectors and supports the existing regional initiatives, the introduction of the denar as a currency to be traded in Serbia will facilitate the achievement of its objectives.

The Croatian kuna will be deleted from the list of currencies traded in the local foreign exchange market as Croatia will join the euro area on 1 January 2023 and embrace the euro as its legal tender.

Once the Decision enters into force, on 1 November 2022 the NBS will start to publish the exchange rate list for the official middle exchange rate of the dinar and the exchange rate list for foreign currency, with the dirham and denar included. The exchange rate of the dinar against the kuna will be removed on 1 January 2023.

Citizens can exchange the Croatian kuna for the dinar in exchange offices and banks in Serbia until end-2022, whereafter they will be able to do so only in specific institutions in Croatia.
