Insured deposits protected, banking sector stable, stability of the dinar to be preserved

The NBS assures citizens and businesses that the banking sector of the Republic of Serbia is stable, well-capitalised and highly liquid, and that all the necessary institutional, financial and regulatory mechanisms are in place to safeguard its stability.

The decision to delicense Alta banka was taken to protect the interests of its depositors and creditors. Problems in the operations of an individual bank cannot be equated with the situation in the banking sector as a whole, which has significant capital and liquidity buffers and continues to provide services to citizens and businesses without interruption.

We particularly emphasise that all deposits covered by the statutory deposit insurance scheme are protected and will be paid out in full up to the insured amount. This is a statutory right of depositors, up to EUR 50,000 per depositor in a bank, with the payout guaranteed by the Republic of Serbia. The Deposit Insurance Agency has the necessary funds, which will be paid out to depositors within the statutory time limit. Depositors will be informed in a timely manner of the bank through which the payout will be made, as well as of all the necessary procedures.

The banking sector is well positioned to support financial stability and ensure the unimpeded provision of banking and payment services to citizens and businesses. The NBS has all the necessary instruments at its disposal to provide additional liquidity support to banks, should the need arise, in accordance with its statutory powers.

At the same time, the NBS unequivocally reaffirms its determination to preserve the stability of the dinar against the euro, as exchange rate stability has been and remains a cornerstone of Serbia's macroeconomic policy. The NBS has both the resources, including a high level of FX reserves, and the determination to maintain such stability. As so far, the NBS will use the instruments at its disposal, including interventions in the FX market whenever needed, to counteract any pressures and preserve the stability of the dinar exchange rate.

The NBS reaffirms its commitment to ensure, as it has done to date, in full cooperation with the banking sector and other competent institutions, the smooth functioning of the financial system and the stability of the domestic currency.
