Following its supervisory activities and an imposed temporary measure, on 30 October, the NBS revoked the operating licence of ALTA banka a.d. Beograd, with a view to protecting depositors and other creditors and preventing the spillover of any negative effects on the society and the economy as whole. By simultaneously adopting the decision on the fulfillment of conditions for the initiation of bankruptcy proceedings against the bank, the NBS transferred its management to the Deposit Insurance Agency, while appropriate proceedings have been initiated against the bank, its shareholders, management bodies, and other responsible persons.
This has ensured that the bank’s assets remain under supervision and prevented their dissipation, allowing all creditors – primarily natural persons and corporate entities that are the bank’s depositors – to regain access to their funds within the shortest possible timeframe.
The bank’s depositors will be notified in a timely manner and as soon as possible as to which bank they can collect their deposits from, up to the insured amount of EUR 50,000, as well as on the method for filing their remaining claims and on their payout.
The aforementioned proceedings in no way release the bank’s debtors from their obligations and they can expect clear instructions on the method of settling their liabilities to the bank following the initiation of the bankruptcy proceedings.
What is crucial at this moment is that all creditors and clients of the bank understand that these proceedings protect their rights, but also preserve the financial stability of the banking sector and the financial market, which is a prerequisite for the further smooth functioning of our entire economy. The protection of depositors and their claims is a priority, and in order to raise and maintain it at the highest possible level, it is necessary to approach everything in an informed manner. Both the NBS and the Deposit Insurance Agency will invest maximum efforts to ensure the entire process is conducted within the shortest possible timeframe, transparently, and taking into account all effects on all market participants.
