SORS data indicate that y-o-y inflation slowed down in July to 1.9%, mainly as a result of the lower fruit and vegetable prices amid an exceptionally good new harvest.
On a m-o-m basis, consumer prices decreased by 0.2% on average in July, led by the cheapening of unprocessed food, particularly fresh vegetables (-15.1%) and fresh fruit (-6.7%). Processed food prices increased by 0.4% in July relative to June, reflecting higher prices of wheat-based products and non-alcoholic beverages.
The prices of both subcategories of food inflation (unprocessed and processed food) were 6.1% lower on average than in July last year, with unprocessed food prices declining by 12.9% and processed food prices by 2.5%.
Energy prices increased by 0.3% m-o-m and by 9.3% y-o-y. The increase in energy prices was driven primarily by the higher prices of petroleum products, which rose 0.6% in July. Y-o-y, petroleum product prices went up by 11.4%.
Core inflation (CPI excluding food, energy, alcohol and tobacco prices) edged up by 0.6% relative to the previous month, spurred primarily by the seasonal increase in the prices of package holidays. The broadly neutral contribution of the prices of products within core inflation reflected, on the one hand, higher prices of household cleaning products and, on the other, a seasonal decline in clothing and footwear prices. Y-o-y, core inflation remained relatively stable, amounting to 4.5% in July.
