500-euro note not withdrawn from circulation

Citizens have nothing to worry about when it comes to holding and using the 500-euro banknote. It can be used in all legal transactions (exchange operations, placing deposits with banks, making permitted payments in the country and abroad), as there is no announcement on the part of the European Central Bank that this note could be withdrawn from circulation.

In the European Monetary Union countries the 500-euro banknote is a legal tender, just as any other denomination of the A series euro notes. Two series of euro notes are circulating alongside each other. In addition to the old, A series which includes seven denominations: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros, there are B series banknotes, rolled out from 2013 to 2019 and including six denominations. Namely, B series do not include the 500-euro note as it was noted that this banknote of the A series was often used in illegal transactions.

For reasons of safety and in view of banknote counterfeits, citizens are advised to perform exchange operations with banks and authorised exchange dealers.
